A couple of days ago my husband pointed out a flock of birds that had lighted in our front yard, with crests on their heads and crimson dots on their backs (when perched—the dots are actually on the tips of secondary wing feathers). We’d never seen these before.
After a lot of riffling through bird books that evening we identified them as cedar waxwings. Unfortunately, they were just passing through, and I wasn’t quick enough to get a picture, but I found a nice one at All About Birds, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s website.

They are so beautiful the don’t even look real. I’ve seen a few, but not for long, and not often.

They seem to move around a lot except when nesting.

The ones we saw had less obvious yellow.
