I think I'm the only person in the entire computer industry who hates Star Trek. It's like a religion to most people in high tech.

Tolkien, on the other hand, transformed my universe. I can hardly wait to see what Peter Jackson does with The Hobbit! (Thanks for inspiring me to reread it. I also have an Annotated Hobbit hanging around here.)

I am deeply-steeped in LOTR's lore, and also STNG. I can't believe how long ago now were Pickard, Riker, Deanna, Data, Worf, and the rest. Time flies.

Feeling a little cranky? Don't you like that Big Bang show?

I don't mind the TV being on while I'm doing something else, but also I find it mostly boring these days, and the commercials, OMG, way too many of them -- I really try to focus on something else. Good movies are still OK to watch. My favorite entertainment? Nighttime dreams. If I could I'd sleep 24 hours a day. Maybe 23, leaving one hour for nourishment and stretching, much like a mature housecat.

The last book I read was one by you, the one that no one else has seen. Oh, 'scuse me, "e-manuscript". That definitely makes me very lucky, but I hope you didn't write it only for you and me. Way too much work, work that probably came with a significant opportunity cost. Relax. Take a nap. Dream.

I no longer watch TV. In the old days, just after returning from India, I was a big fan of Star Trek, Star Trek TNG. I also liked SG-! and Atlantis, ordering them from Netflix and watching without commercial interruptions, 2 or 3 episodes at a time. Atlantis, not so much, and haven't found anything really excellent since.

Books? Well, I'm a Tolkien fan, too. There's so much in LOTR that they bear re-reading every few years. There are some science fiction authors that I love, too, like White and Cherryh and Willis. Lately, though, I have bought some sci fi books, but can't get into them. Then I found the John the Eunuch series and they were great. I seem to read a lot when the books are fascinating, and just a few pages or a chapter at a time when I'm not really enspelled.

Nice to read an entry from you again. I was wondering where you were, what you were doing, how you be. Hope all is well.

Aside from not reading enough, I have almost never reread books. I probably should make an exception for Tolkien whose books I read as a teenager, and which are among my favorites of all time and went a long way toward shaping my tastes in literature and view of everything, all on a single reading. I did recently reread my favorite science fiction book of all time -- Alfred Bester's The Stars My Destination and enjoyed it just as much as the first time. One worry though is that I have not found any modern fantasy I can read. I'm not sure why. Every time the style perhaps, or the attitude just seems wrong to me somehow - utterly unreadable. Is it simply because the modern books I've read have not been my kind of books, or because they are *not Tolkien or I have lost my taste for fantasy ? Do I want to find out?
